This week’s podcast interview was such fun to re This week’s podcast interview was such fun to record! Jess from @roots_and_refuge joined me to talk about advice she gives beginning gardeners, and let me tell you, it’s SO GOOD! I wish I had had someone tell me these things. We talked about:
▪️how to view the garden as a classroom — we’re always learning!
▪️how she stays inspired, which helps her keep up with her garden
▪️how we can be kind to our future selves (when we’re in July we’ll be thankful we did this!)
▪️how she approaches pest control as an organic gardener
▪️how to approach applying gardening advice to your climateThis conversation is a must listen! And her book — The First Time Gardener: Growing Vegetables — is a must read!Jess only lives less than hour away from me, and it was a delight to chat with a fellow Arkansas gardener!Listen at The Beginner’s Garden Podcast on your favorite podcasting app, or check out the link in my profile. If you’ve already listened to this conversation, tell Jess how much you enjoyed it in the comments!#gardenpodcast #gardeningpodcast #arkansasgardeners #arkansasgarden #arkansasgardening #firsttimegardener #beginninggardener #newgardener #gardenershelpinggardeners #gardenpodcasts
A new month = new weekly garden tasks! March is on A new month = new weekly garden tasks! March is one of my busiest months in the garden so I depend on my calendar to get everything done.Besides planting times, I also schedule projects like creating new beds and conditioning my straw bales. Everything I can think of goes on the calendar. (Of course, some things slip through but they’re more manageable when the main tasks are accounted for.)Keep in mind, the timing of my garden tasks are based on my zone 7b climate with an average last frost date of April 1.(This page is part of my Complete Garden Planner, available in my shop — link in profile or journeywithJill.net/shop )#gardenplanning #gardenplanner #gardenorganization #planningthegarden #gardentasks #gardenprojects #gardenproject #marchgarden #marchgardening #printablegardenplanner #arkansasgarden #zone7gardening #arkansasgardening #zone7b
The only thing better than spending the day in the The only thing better than spending the day in the garden is spending it in the garden with a friend! My friend Tiffany and I planted onions all afternoon! If you attended my masterclass a few weeks ago you probably “met” her in the chat. She works with me behind the scenes on the blog, podcast, and pretty much everything else. 😆But more than that, Tiffany and I have been best friends for over 22 years when we met in college. We roomed together, worked in the JCPenney shoe department together, and now work together again. 😊Sometimes I long for the days when people used to garden together, but this is definitely the next best thing. I wish I could say all the onions got planted, but I went a bit overboard and ordered too many. And now I have to find more space to put the others. (I do this every year; you’d think I’d learn by now!)Anyway, it was such a great day!#gardenbuddy #gardenfriends #onions #plantingonions #plantingonionstoday #springplanting #springgarden #gardentherapy #plantingtime
I planted my Salanova lettuce in the garden today. I planted my Salanova lettuce in the garden today. Even though my lettuce survived my 7b winter last year, I can’t help but be a tad nervous.(Is Salanova as cold-hardy as other lettuce?)
I bought these seeds from @johnnys_seeds after ogling over them in others’ Instagram feeds. 😂 They germinated and grew better than any other kind I’ve planted. I potted them up a little over two weeks ago, and they needed more room.Because our weather is holding at a more normal pattern (at the moment) I decided to go ahead and plant. Besides the freakish cold last week when I brought them inside, they’ve been living in the greenhouse for awhile, so I think they’re acclimated enough. Can you believe we were at -6F a week ago, and today we reached 75F? Crazy!! It felt so good to get outside and plant something!! 💕#salanovalettuce #salanova #lettuce #springplanting #raisedbeds #raisedbedgarden #raisedbedgardening #raisedgardenbeds #saladgreens #growyourown #growyourownfood #ediblegarden
Today I took advantage of the sunshine (while snow Today I took advantage of the sunshine (while snow still covers my garden) to build these two obelisks that will go in my elevated raised bed.Okay...my husband built them. But they were my idea, and I helped hand him the power tools. 😊My plans for these are to have 3 succession crops climbing up them all season: purple snap peas in spring, cucumbers in summer, and scarlet runner beans in the fall. I can’t wait for these obelisks to be covered with veggies!I love vertical gardening and I’m always brainstorming new ways to use it. Once the snow melts in my raised bed, I’ll place them and show you what they’ll look like in the bed.(Also, succession planting is a HUGE part of how I grow an almost year-round garden, and I teach how to use it to stretch the boundaries of your season in my garden planning online course, Dream to Garden. Through Sunday, February 21, enrollment is open with a huge stack of bonuses that will go away on Monday. Just hang in there a few more days, lettuce babies Just hang in there a few more days, lettuce babies!! 🥬So, I *may* have started this Salanova lettuce a bit too early. But in my defense (1) my lettuce last year survived all winter and (2) who can predict we’d experience a winter blast that hasn’t been seen in a century?Thankfully.... I held off on planting these in the garden when I saw the cold was coming in, and instead I potted them up.AND, potting them up was a really good decision. They’ve grown so much and if they’d stayed in their soil blocks, they would definitely have suffered. I’ve learned the hard way, when in doubt, pot up. I’ve planted some very stressed seedlings that didn’t do all that great in the garden — a stress that could have been prevented by transferring to a larger pot. Lesson learned the hard way. Now, if only Mother Nature could get over her temper tantrum and return to normal next week, MAYBE I can consider hardening these off and get them in the garden.I can’t wait to see these beautiful lettuces keep growing in the garden. They’re already gorgeous!#salanovalettuce #seedstarting #indoorseedstarting #lettuce #lettucegrow #indoorseedlings #springgarden #gardening #gardeningtips #seedstarting
