I’m doing a couple of new things this garden sea I’m doing a couple of new things this garden season!1️⃣ I’ll be growing in new Birdies metal raised beds sold by Kevin at @epicgardening. I’ve been eyeing them for awhile. I put these beds together in about a half hour. So easy!2️⃣ I’m generally not a fan of landscape fabric but I just can’t keep up with the weeding and mowing of my very large garden space. So in a few areas I’m adding this heavier-duty fabric to pathways. I only have about 6” of the fabric inside the beds because it’s important to me that my plants’ roots have access to the soil beneath. (That’s a personal preference.) I do plan to cover this fabric with pine needles and/or wood chips. So, we’ll see how this new adventure goes! If the rain holds off tomorrow I’m hoping to fill at least one bed and get it planted with spinach.#metalraisedbeds #raisedbeds #raisedbedgardening #metalraisedbed #birdiesgardenproducts #gardenspace #gardenlife
My final seed order came in, this one from @seed_s My final seed order came in, this one from @seed_savers_exchange. Here’s what I bought and why I enjoy ordering from this company.Have you grown any of these varieties?#heirloomseeds #seedsaversexchange #seedorder #seedunboxing
It’s the little things. Last year I finally got It’s the little things. Last year I finally got enough of a beet harvest to pickle enough beets to last me, most likely, all year.I say, “it’s the little things” because pickled beets may not get you excited but they’re my guilty pleasure. I eat them on my salads almost daily and I use the vinegar brine to make my own pickled beet vinaigrette. No one else in my house likes beets in any form but that’s ok!I love them and I love that I don’t have to buy the $5+ jars of beets at the grocery store. That adds up!I’ll be sowing my next my season’s planting in a couple of weeks and I’m hoping next harvest is as good as last years!#beets #pickledbeets #cannedbeets #homegrown #homecanning #gardenlove #gardenlife

It's hard to believe that three years ago I took a It's hard to believe that three years ago I took a chance on planting a few seeds that would end up giving back not only during the growing season, but also for me personally this week, as I've been under the weather.

It's the simple "coneflower" that most people are familiar with, but they don't realize that it's actually known as echinacea.

Flower gardeners love it for its beauty. Vegetable gardeners love it for its ability to attract and support beneficial insects. Natural living advocates love it for its well-researched health benefits.

But it's not as simple and fast to grow as other flowers. Echinacea germinates best when subjected to cold temperatures first -- known as cold stratification. I planted my first seeds in moist soil in cell trays and put them in the refrigerator for a month before bringing them under grow lights.

Once they sprouted, they grew under lights until they were large enough to transplant outside. Even then, they grew slowly and didn't bloom until the second year, 2020.

I actually didn't grow echinacea for the blooms initially; that was just a bonus! I grew them for the root, because that's the most beneficial part for the purpose I wanted. But the root isn't harvested until a couple of years later so the entire plant isn't killed.

It was 2021 -- 2 1/2 years after I first planted the first seeds -- that I harvested the root for the first time and used it to make a tincture. And it's been my go-to when "things" come up. You'll have to research yourself --and I encourage you to -- because it's made a difference for me. I've used it enough times for various "things" that I'm convinced it's not a coincidence.

For a flower to check so many boxes, it was worth the wait! And this year I collected seeds for the first time and am hoping to start the whole process over again for more.
