Meet Jill

Never in my wildest imagination would I have ever thought I’d have a blog, podcast, and multiple online courses, and a book for beginning gardeners. In fact, I never expected to grow a garden in the first place!

But after I quit my job to become a stay-at-home mom in January 2013, I sought to help out our new one-income family by growing a garden to save money on groceries.

And I was hooked.

But, as a new gardener with no experience or help, I struggled with finding the most basic gardening information. Google and failure were my primary teachers.

That’s why after a few seasons, hours of research, and a gut-level love for gardening that wouldn’t go away, I started helping other beginning gardeners like me grow their own gardens, giving them a “shortcut” around the mistakes I made.

I started writing blog posts and filming YouTube videos right away, and in January 2017 I launched the Beginner’s Garden Podcast. In October 2019 I wrote my first traditionally published book — Vegetable Gardening for Beginners — having no idea that its release in April 2020 would coincide with a world of new gardeners during a worldwide pandemic.

On a personal note, my husband Matt and I live in the Russellville, Arkansas area with our children, Drew and Alyssa; our dog Lucy; three cats; and eighteen chickens. Though I am the primary gardener of our 3,000 square-foot area, my husband helps me with all the big projects, like building raised beds and the chicken coops.

After working as a manager at a local Ford dealership for a decade after college, God made the way for me to stay home with our children in January 2013. Besides gardening and writing, podcasting, and teaching about gardening, I also have been able to pursue my lifelong passion of writing Bible studies.
