When I started gardening, the fertility of my soil was not even on my radar. My main concerns were more practical — choosing the crops and figuring out when to plan them. The soil was the last thing on my mind.

What I realized, partly through some major failures of some crops and fantastical success of others — is that soil fertility and structure plays a HUGE role in the overall success of your garden.

In this episode of the Beginner’s Garden Podcast, I attempt to demystify the mysterious world of the soil. I talk about important topics like:

  • why you should test your soil and how to do it for free
  • what your soil structure means to your garden, how to identify it, and how to change it
  • the Big 3 nutrients plants need
  • 2 ways I make sure nutrients are available for my crops
  • Bonus tip: how I prepare my raised beds for the best tomato harvest

Soil fertility can seem hard to understand, but hopefully the tips in this episode will give you practical information to help you grow a healthy garden.
