You read a chapter and close your Bible, frustrated. The nugget of truth or new revelation you hoped for didn’t emerge.
People talk about how important it is to read the Bible, but you wonder what the real benefit is. Maybe I’m just not cut out for this, you think. Maybe I need to buy one of those Bibles with commentaries in the margin. Maybe devotionals are my only hope for real life application.
You are right; it is important to read the Bible regularly. Your heart is in the right place. But you don’t want a history lesson every day. And you don’t really — at your core — just want a caffeine-like pick-me-up to get you through your day. You want to hear your Father speak to you through what you read.
Journey through Acts
Let’s look together at the very first Christians. How alone and clueless they must have felt after Jesus ascends into Heaven, leaving them here.
But through the book of Acts, we see how they grow, how they deal with life, how they read Scripture, how they use prayer to hear God speak, and how they face persecution and hardship.
Through the study of Acts, let’s enter their world and encounter the God who changed their lives.
And through the reading of Acts together, let’s look at some of my favorite methods of studying Scripture — reading between the lines where the Holy Spirit meets you right where you are.
